Hunt Deltel & Co. Ltd marks 75th anniversary
One of Seychelles’ business community’s principal companies, Hunt Deltel & Co Ltd is celebrating its 75th anniversary.
The company was formed in 1937 by two prominent members of the local community, Percival Hunt and Alexandre Deltel, and was involved in shipping, insurance trading and vehicle distribution.
Today the company continues most of these activities but is focused primarily on shipping and logistics.
They are agent for Maersk Line, who have a regular weekly call at Seychelles and are also the Seychelles handling agent for the Spanish purse seiner tuna fleet that operates throughout the western Indian Ocean.
The company is also one of the two investors in the well known Eden Island Marina and is responsible for its management.
The marina can cater to super yachts up to 110m and readers will have seen many of these magnificent vessels in our waters in recent years.
The ship management activities are ISO certified.
The company’s other well known activities are their Ford vehicle dealership and the DHL international courier service. Clearing and Forwarding services are carried out by the company’s subsidiary Express Logistics Ltd.
The company started with just five employees and at the time the international airport opened in 1972, staffing levels were little changed. Since then though the company has grown with the economy and now has over 130 employees; additionally they have a pool of over 400 stevedores, who handle the transshipment of tuna from the Spanish purse seiner fleet and also delivery to the IOT cannery. All the company’s employees and directors are Seychellois.
Since the company was formed by the two founding partners, the company’s share ownership has also expanded and there are now over 40 shareholders, who have invested in the company and of these over 95% are Seychellois.
In 2011 the company opened an office on Praslin and currently it is in the process of building a new support facility for its tuna activities on Zone 14.
The company’s strategy is to continue investing in the local economy.
